Testing

Interviews with 4 seniors and paper prototype testing with 3 participants helped refine the design based on their feedback.

Use the 'ask trainer' hint while doing the daily 'song guessing' task.

Tester 1
Chi Li, 62 yrs old, Retired Soldier.

Chi Li tends to stay on the same page when facing unclear features during testing. He was confused due to the lack of confirmation after sending a message to a friend and struggled with tasks requiring screen swiping, as he didn’t realize the playlist could be swiped vertically. On the final data content page, he expressed interest in knowing more details and was enthusiastic about listening to music, even singing along with a song he enjoyed.

Task Flow 2: Open the message to complete the daily 'song guessing' task

Tester 2
Jie, 60 yrs old, Teacher.

The playlist page needs to add a music category with clear descriptions. Jie, despite knowing her task, presses each button to understand its function, showing her preference for exploring and solving problems independently. She uses the search box to find songs when unsure about their music category. Jie also showed strong interest in the practice mode, spending considerable time with the speed and pitch controllers during the task.

Task Flow 3: Practice the songs from the 'breath control' list and save the data

Tester 3
Yu Lin, 60 yrs old, Restaurant Owner.

Yu Lin quickly locates buttons to perform tasks and is highly familiar with mobile phone use; she is interested in asking friends for help and hopes to share tasks with them through other applications. She also suggested that the steps to receive letters could be made more intuitive.

Design

Singcubator combines “Sing,” symbolizing expression, and “Incubator,” representing growth and support. The name reflects the app’s mission to help seniors (55-70 years old) navigate the digital world with confidence through accessible and user-friendly design.

Conclusion

One of the most impactful lessons I learned was the accessibility and inclusivity in design. Although I had a basic understanding of these concepts before, this project deepened my appreciation for creating experiences that cater to diverse users, including those with disabilities. I also gained practical insights into implementing features like color contrast adjustments and clear navigation paths, ensuring everyone can engage with the product effortlessly.
